Read previewThe Texas Attorney General's office sued Harris County, which contains Houston, over its new guaranteed income pilot that would give nearly 2,000 residents $500 a month for 18 months with no strings attached. The state is seeking to block Harris County from giving its first payments to participants, which are slated to start in April. In response, Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee said that the lawsuit is "nothing more than another attack" on the county government. The Austin Guaranteed Income Pilot has distributed $1,000 a month to 135 low-income families, who reported using their money for housing, food, and other daily costs. Republican lawmakers are trying to ban guaranteed income programs in states such as Arizona, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Moses denied the state's motion to block federal officials from destroying the wire fencing pending the outcome of the state's lawsuit filed in October. The judge last month had ordered the federal government to temporarily refrain from cutting or removing the razor wire while she considered the state's motion. Paxton said the claim was based on only two months of clinical trial data, and vaccine recipients' "absolute risk reduction" showed that the vaccine was just 0.85% effective. Media Matters was served a double whammy on Monday, after reporting on X's advertising strategy. Elon Musk is now suing the watchdog, and Texas AG Ken Paxton is investigating the group for fraud. The report, published Thursday, triggered an advertiser exodus from X, after which Musk declared that he'd file a "thermonuclear" lawsuit against Media Matters. In a statement to BI, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said X's lawsuit was "frivolous" and "meant to bully X's critics into silence." A Media Matters representative did not immediately respond when asked to comment on Paxton's investigation.

Elon Musk's social media company, X, sued Media Matters for America and one of its staff members Monday over an investigative report the progressive watchdog organization published saying Nazi content ran on the X app alongside advertisements from major corporations. News of the lawsuit coincided with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's announcing an investigation into Media Matters for possible fraudulent activity. Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said the website would defend itself. Media Matters stands behind its reporting and looks forward to winning in court," he said in a statement. In the lawsuit, X alleges that Media Matters' portrayal of the app is untrue because its article did not reflect what typical users see.

A family navigates the bank of the Rio Grande past razor wire while searching for an entry point into the United States from Mexico, in Eagle Pass, Texas, U.S. July 30, 2023. U.S. District Judge Alia Moses in Del Rio, Texas barred the Biden administration from cutting or removing the wire until at least Nov. 13, as she considers a lawsuit brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, accusing the U.S. government of illegally destroying state property. The concertina wire fencing was installed on private property by the Texas National Guard as part of Operation Lone Star, an initiative launched by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2021 aimed at deterring illegal border crossings. Texas, meanwhile, is separately defending its authority to install floating buoys in the middle of the Rio Grande to deter migrants. Sept 28 (Reuters) - Yelp Inc (YELP.N) is asking a federal court to stop Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton from suing it over notices telling its users that crisis pregnancy centers do not provide abortions or referrals for abortions. Crisis pregnancy centers offer pregnant women counseling while seeking to prevent them from having abortions. In August 2022, Yelp began posting a notice on crisis pregnancy centers' pages stating that they "typically provide limited medical services and may not have licensed medical professionals onsite." The company said in the complaint that it posted the notices to prevent users from being misled by crisis pregnancy centers that deliberately targeted women seeking abortions. In February, in response to a complaint by Paxton, the company changed the notices to state that crisis pregnancy centers "do not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers."

Paxton, who did not attend the majority of the two-week trial, was not seen in the chamber as some senators wandered around their desks. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is underway with live television coverage, a former aide who reported him to the FBI on the witness stand and his wife watching from her desk in the state Senate but prohibited from participating.
